G.Marconi Airport, profits double in spite of the recession

Group turnover reaches almost 80 million euro

The “Aeroporto G. Marconi di Bologna” shareholders’ meeting has approved the financial statements for 2009.

In spite of the general economic recession and the severe problems affecting the air transport industry, the company ended the financial year in the black, with a profit of 4.3 million euro, showing strong growth (+130%) compared to 2008. The data shows that the increase in passenger traffic (up 13.2% to a total of 4,774,697 passengers) has translated into significant growth in terms of both aeronautical (+14%) and non-aeronautical (+8%) revenues. Overall turnover totalled 62 million euro, up 10%compared to the previous year.

The gross operating margin stood at 17.7 million, showing a slight drop (-8%) compared to 2008. This was caused by the impact of the recession on certain categories of traffic and increased handling costs mainly due to higher passenger numbers and special operations for snow removal, as well as the start-up of new services (assistance to passengers with reduced mobility) and increased labour costs related to hiring new staff (+11) and salary reviews related to the renewal of the contract.

The decrease in GOM was more than offset by a considerable improvement in “asset” management: financial management, management of subsidiary companies and non-recurring events. As far as the subsidiaries are concerned, it is important to note that the positive results achieved are to be attributed to the seachange that the Group has undergone since 2008, with particular attention to industrial reorganization and renewal and a greater focus on the core businessas outlined in the Industrial Plan. The consolidated financial statements show that Group turnover has risen to 79.5 million (+12%), with a GOM on the rise (+2%) which has just topped 17.7 million, for a 3.4 million euro profit (+28%).
