EXPO SHANGHAI, THE WINNER OF BEST DESIGN CONCEPT FOR BOLOGNA'S BOOTH

Antonio Mastrorocco in partnership with Consorzio Creativo Library and Loop Multimedia Creations has been selected

Antonio Mastrorocco has been selected, in partnership with Consorzio Creativo Library and Loop Multimedia Creations, to develop the concept for Bologna’s booth at the World. The winning design was selected from among 28 projects presented to a panel of judges specially appointed by the Institutional ExpoCommittee. The winner will have the task of designing the booth through the relevant technical phases, and coordinating the work involved in the concept development.

Procedure. Following the launch of the selection process to appoint the booth design coordinator for Bologna, a briefing was held in December for all architects, designers and creative consultants interested in taking part in the competition. Bologna Municipal Council then nominated a Institutional Expo Committee, which in turn appointed the members of the judging panel.

Institutional ExpoCommittee. The committee, chaired by Sergio Cofferati, Mayor of Bologna, comprises Beatrice Draghetti, President of the Province of Bologna, Bruno Filetti, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Duccio Campagnoli, Regional Councillor for Production activities for the Emilia-Romagna region. PromoBologna and BolognaFiere are also on the committee, represented respectively by the General Manager Giuseppina Gualtieri and the Managing Director Federico Minoli.

Judging Panel. The panel of judges, appointed by the Institutional ExpoCommittee, is made up of 9 members: Matteo Agnoletto, Sergio Aleotti, Davide Celli, GianlucaCristoni, Alessandro Del Piano, Giovanni Giuliani, Ping Gui Hu, Gianfranco Maraniello, Patrik Romano.

Selection Criteria. During the December briefing, candidates were appraised of the following selection criteria to be used by the judging panel: identification of the city of Bologna; project and design choices that pay particular attention to environmental issues and energy saving, to safeguarding the quality of life and to technological innovation: creative interpretation and adherence to the competition themes (culture & creativity, technological innovation, human rights and social inclusion, urban and infrastructural transformation): originality, creativity and visual impact of the presentation; manageability and usability of the stand (considering the large number of visitors); flexibility in the use of spaces; professional fee.

Facebook. To provide candidates with information regarding the procedures for presenting projects as well as answers to questions, doubts and technical requests, in December PromoBologna – case-coordinator for Bologna’s participation in Expo 2010 – set up a group on Facebook “Bologna@ExpoShanghai2010”. This attracted contributions from around sixty users including architects, designers and creative consultants. The group, reserved for those who took part in the technical briefing, has acted as a “forum” for an open exchange of ideas between candidates interested in taking part in the competition. Updates were also provided on the PromoBologna website.

The Winner. Antonio Mastrorocco is the creative director of Consorzio Creativo Library (CCL), a content provider which deals mainly with communication events. CCL is an interdisciplinary consortium of professionals from the fashion and design sectors. CCL’s aim is “to give shape to a strategy and bring conceptual depth to communication by means of a multisensory approach”. Loop is a virtuous circle of ideas, design projects and creativity that revolves around multimedia. Their current projects include developing multitouch interfaces and Augmented Reality installations.
